Product Description: This extraordinary cabinet, often used as a sideboard, speaks to the height of British prestige - and the best of the Regency style. The case itself, with highly figured swirl mahogany veneers, has a shallow frieze with gilded capitals and a centered ormolu mount. Turned baluster supports are variously ebonized and gilded for contrast. The doors have a delicately inlaid quatrefoil motif. By contrast, four carved paw feet are oversized and gilded. Circa 1815. The original resides in Stratfield Saye House, home to the Duke of Wellington, the "Great Duke" who defeated Napoleon, setting the course for much of history as we know it. While a number of magnificent palaces were offered to the Duke by a grateful nation, he nonetheless preferred the manageable but dignified Stratfield Saye. The house was subsequently filled with the most extraordinary paintings, porcelain, and furniture of the period - much of which is now on display in national museums.
